Re: Drug arrests

On 04-07-07 at approximately 22:38pm Deputy Sheriff Tom Crabtree conducted a traffic stop on a 1994 Oldsmobile passenger car registered to Marquita L. Askew at the intersection of Oaks Road and John Puryear Drive in McCracken County. Upon contact with the driver, Deputy Crabtree identified the driver as Marquita L. Askew and her passenger as Nathaniel G. Cody. While speaking to the couple, Crabtree detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle. Askew admitted to smoking marijuana in the vehicle just prior to the stop. A search of the vehicle revealed a black nylon bag in the glove box that contained two baggies of powder cocaine, digital scales with cocaine residue and several plastic baggy corners. Crabtree located a loaded 9mm semi automatic handgun under the front seat between where the couple had been sitting. Inside the trunk of the vehicle, Crabtree located an addtional loaded 9mm semi automatic handgun. Both Askew and Cody were arrested and transported to the McCracken County Regional Jail. The vehicle driven by Askew was seized by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department.

Charges: Improper equipment (only one tail light / brake light), trafficking in a 1st degree controlled substance-cocaine with a firearm enhancement, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and driving under the influence of marijuana.

Charges: Trafficking a 1st degree controlled substance-cocaine with a firearm enhancement, possession of drug paraphernalia

Trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree- cocaine is a class C felony punishable by 5-10 years in prison. These charges were enhanced because of the firearm in close proximity to the cocaine which enhances the class "C" felony to a class "B" felony which is punishable by 10-20 years in prison.
