Traffic on US HWY 60 West just past the mall was slowed for approximately 45 mins today due to a 2 vehicle accident. A 1989 Buick Park Avenue driven by 40 year old Joe Powers of Union City TN was westbound when he lost control and crossed into the eastbound lane hitting another vehicle and then the guardrail before coming to a stop. The second vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, was driven by 18 year old Elizabeth Kelley of Mayfield. Ms. Kelly said she and her passenger a JV was eastbound when at the last minute they noticed Powers coming toward them but were unable to avoid being hit, they were uninjured. Mr. Powers was transported by ambulance to Western Baptist Hospital where he was treated for injuries he sustained in the accident. Officers determined that alcohol and drug use were contributing factors and Mr. Powers was charged with driving DUI suspended, Operating Motor Vehicle Under the Influence 2nd, and no insurance.
