From: Detective Jesse Riddle

On 04-27-09 at approximately 10:28 am the McCracken County Sheriff's Department received a call from a concerned citizen regarding some suspicious items that they had located on their property off of Biggs Road in Kevil possibly related to marijuana cultivation. Deputy Mark Vallelunga responded to the call and spoke with the complainant. The complainant showed Vallelunga several empty potting soil bags and empty black plastic pots leading Vallelunga to believe that there were some Marijuana plants near by. Vallelunga began searching a near by creek bed and located a male subject walking in the creek dressed in camouflage carrying a large duffel bag and gardening utensil. Vallelunga spoke with the individual and identified him as 56 year old William Dukes of Biggs Road. Vallelunga searched Dukes and the duffel bag he was carrying. The search revealed a set of pruning shears, potting soil bags, fluorescent marking ties, and other items similar to what had been located by the deputy. Vallelunga contacted the Sheriff's Department Narcotics Division and advised them of the situation. Sheriff's Detectives conducted a brief follow-up investigation that lead to a the execution of a search warrant at 3060 Biggs Road in Kevil(Mr Dukes residence). Detectives and Sheriff Deputies executed the search warrant at 3:30pm. A search of 3060 Biggs Road revealed 57 marijuana plants in various stages of growth throughout the property and a loaded 12 gauge shotgun with the serial number that had been removed. The Marijuana plants were found to be concealed in camouflage buckets behind a wood pile, inside overgrown landscaping, inside a barn, and inside a locked closet within the residence. Several of the Marijuana plants were maintained with grow lights and fertilizer. Detectives also located approximately one hundred different how to magazines and books on the cultivation of Marijuana. Dukes admitted in an interview with sheriff's detectives that he had in the past planted marijuana on the surrounding properties in an efforts to keep from getting caught. Dukes admitted that he had intended on transplanting the marijuana plants he was caught with as they matured to surrounding properties. Dukes charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon stem from the shotgun located inside the residence.
