McCracken County Man Charged with Illegally Diverting $180,000 dollars from elderly couples account
On July 23, 2009, the McCracken County Sheriffs Dept Detective Division received a call from Social Services concerning a married couple in there 80’s who were being financially exploited by their nephew. This couple was brought to Paducah from Martin, Tennessee in 2008 to live with their nephew, 57 year old, Roger Lee Winsett, who gained Power of Attorney over their finances.
Mr. Winsett had moved the couple into his home at 250 Valiant Drive, Paducah, Ky 42001 in McCracken County. Mr. Winsett had made a withdrawal in access of $150,00 from the couple’s bank in Martin, Tennessee by using his power of attorney, Mr. Winsett then placed their money in his personal bank account. Mr. Winsett used the money he transferred from the Martin, Tennessee acct into his acct to purchase several vehicles . One of the vehicles was a 2009 Lexus and he had placed the title of the vehicle in his name. Two other vehicles were purchased for his ex-wife and his stepson using the same transferred funds without permission of the elderly couple.
In the investigation it was determined that Mr. Winsett purchased five rooms of furniture for his new house and was also able to furnish his office with new furniture. He was also able to make a $55,000 down payment on his new home on Valiant Drive. Mr. Roger Winsett had also hired a chauffeur to drive him around town at $100 a day. Figures show at this time that about $70,000 has been misappropriated. Mr. Winsett was interviewed at Social Services on North 8th Street where he confessed to buying the 2009 Lexus and putting the vehicle in his name without the consent of the elderly couple. The investigation is continuing on the money that is still missing. Search warrants were executed on his home, his office and on the retrieving of the three vehicles that he had purchased. Bank records were obtained from Mr. Winsett’s account showing where the deposits had been made and checks where he had purchased one of the vehicles. Mr. Winsett was arrested on a warrant on July 27, 2009 and lodged in the McCracken Co. Jail on the charge of exploitation of the elderly, a Class C felony. Mr. Winsett’s bond is $15,000 cash. Mr. Winsett’s preliminary hearing will be held on August 4, 2009 at the McCracken Co. District Court.
